Master program and its requirements 

The CGS has established minimum requirements for admission to Master’s Programs. Individual Master’s Programs may set additional and/or higher standards for admission. The minimum requirements are:
  1. A cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale or equivalent, in all undergraduate work;
  2. A Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from an accredited university recognized by the UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research; and
  3. A score of at least 6.0 on the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) Academic exam or equivalent, for all disciplines delivered predominantly in English. This test score must be less than two years old at the time of application, with the following exceptions:
    • A native speaker of English who has completed his/her undergraduate education in an English-medium institution and in a country where English is the official language (see list of eligible native English speaking countries); or
    • An applicant with undergraduate degree from an English-medium institution who can provide evidence of acquiring a minimum TOEFL score of 500 on the paper-based test, or its equivalent, at the time of admission to his/her undergraduate program.
An applicant with a Bachelor degree recognized by the UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research may be granted conditional admission into a Master’s program in one and only one of the following cases:
  1. An applicant with an IELTS score of 5.5, or its equivalent. Such a student must meet the following requirements during the period of conditional admission or be subject to dismissal (Preparation Course to Improve IELTS Course)
    • Must achieve a minimum IELTS score of 6.0, or its equivalent, by the end of the student’s first semester of study;
    • May take a maximum of six (6) credits hours in the first semester, not including intensive English courses;
    • Must achieve an overall GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in the first 9 credit hours of credit-bearing courses studied in the Master’s program.
  2. An applicant with an undergraduate cumulative GPA less than 3.0 but equal or higher than 2.5, or its equivalent. Such a student must meet the following requirements during the period of conditional admission or be subject to dismissal:
    • May take a maximum of nine (9) credits hours in the first semester of study;
    • Must achieve an overall GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in the first 9 credit hours of credit-bearing courses studied in the Master’s program.
  3. An applicant with an undergraduate cumulative GPA less than 3.0 but with relevant work experience factored into the calculation of the GPA to become equal or higher than 2.5. Such a student must meet the following requirements during the period of conditional admission or be subject to dismissal:
    • May take a maximum of nine (9) credits hours in the first semester of study;
    • Must achieve an overall GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in the first 9 credit hours of credit-bearing courses studied in the Master’s program.
A minimum IELTS score of 4.0 or equivalent is required for admission into a Master’s Program whose language of instruction is Arabic
Individual Master’s Programs with professional orientation may include specific provisions for factoring relevant work experience into the calculation of the GPA for conditional acceptance. These provisions must be approved by the Academic Council.
Application package must include the following:
  1. Completed application form;
  2. The deposit slip of the required non-refundable application fee, as relevant to the program, deposited in the university’s bank account;
  3. Identity documents as required for Emirati students (copy of passport and Khulasat Al-Qaid) and international students (copy of passport);
  4. Two certified copies of official transcripts from all Colleges or universities attended (the applicant must arrange for these to be sent directly to the Office of Enrollment); and
  5. An official copy of the applicant’s IELTS certificate or equivalent (the applicant must arrange for this to be sent directly to the Office of Enrollment);
  6. Recommendation letters as required by the individual programs.
Phd programs and its REQUIREMENTS 
  • The minimum requirements for admission to the PhD program are:
    • A Master’s Degree from an accredited university recognized by the UAE Ministry of Education, in an area appropriate to the academic program to which application is being made.
    • A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale or equivalent, in the Master’s degree earned at an accredited university recognized by the UAE Ministry of Education.
    • A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited university recognized by the UAE Ministry of Education, in an area appropriate to the academic program to which application is being made with a minimum GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale or its equivalent.
    • A score of 6.5 or higher on the IELTS Academic exam or equivalent, for all disciplines in which the main language of instruction is English or the dissertation must be written in English. This test score must be less than two years old at the time of application, with the following exceptions:
      •  - A native speaker of English who has completed his/her Master's degree in an English-medium institution and in a country where English is the official language; or
      •  - An applicant with a Master's degree from an English-medium institution who can provide evidence of acquiring a minimum IELTS score of 6.0 or its equivalent, at the time of admission to his/her Master's program.
  • A minimum IELTS score of 5.0 or equivalent is required for admission into an offering of the PhD Program whose language of instruction is Arabic.
  • Individual Colleges may set additional and/or higher standards for admission to the PhD Program in their respective Department/College.
  • Application package must include the following:
    • Completed application form;
    • Identity documents as required for Emirati students (copies of passport and Khulasat Al-Qaid) and international students (copy of passport);
    • One certified copy of official diploma and transcript from each university attended;
    • Official copy of the applicant’s score on the IELTS exam or equivalent;

Scholarships for masters and training courses offer you the chance to pursue a one-year specialised master’s degree programme or a 4-to-6-month advanced training course within a higher education institution of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation, Belgium.

The  2012 Fellowships report  shows the progress of the  activities planned under the scholarship program during 2012 , from the selection of candidates for the preparation of the 2013 program.
This was the  thirteenth year of implementation  of the Convention on Scholarships  and Internships . The experience gained over the past twelve years has served as a basis for the smooth running of the activities.
It was, in addition, the  third year  of  funding  for PhDs and doctoral students in the South, namely  doctoral, doctoral and local scholarships .
The  first part  of the report summarizes the  various procedures and procedures implemented under the scholarship program,  such as the selection of fellows, the organization of their arrival in Belgium and, in the context of international courses and internships, the results obtained by the fellows.
The  second part  is devoted to  statistics . It presents graphically the number of applications received and the number of fellows selected, in particular by country and by gender.
The  third part  concerns the  preparation of the 2013 program , and more specifically the distribution of scholarships in the framework of international courses and internships and the arrangements related to the implementation of doctoral, doctoral and local scholarships.
Finally, the  fourth part presents the  expenditures  that have been made for the proper implementation of the program.

Each year, ARES grants an average of 150 scholarships as part of the master’s program, and 70 grants for training courses, to citizens from countries in the global South.

Applying for an ARES grant is totally free. ARES does not charge fees at any stage of the application or selection process. You may inform us via e-mail at scholarships-cooperation@ares-ac.be of any problems with individuals or companies who claim to represent ARES and request any payment.
Any application form containing payment will systematically be rejected.
How do I submit a grant application?
Fill out the application form:
  • It must be carefully completed and sent to ARES (rue Royale 180, 1000 Brussels, Belgium) BY POST or EXPRESS DELIVERY SERVICE ONLY, which must have received it by 7 FEBRUARY 2020* at the latest (we do not take into consideration the postmarked date; we only consider application files received on our offices by the deadline, at the latest);
  • NO return receipt for applications will be signed nor delivered;
  • Only applications presented on the relevant forms will be considered, in the language in which the training course is given;
  • All elements necessary for the application file (application form AND additional information requested) must be included in the same mailing AND correctly stapled or bound so that no documents are lost. No additional elements for the application sent later will be considered;
  • All applicants selected and on reserve status will receive an e-mail when selections are made (June 2020). Applicants who are not selected will receive an e-mail by the end of June 2020 at the latest;
  • Documents submitted to ARES will not be returned to applicants;

HONG KONG PHD FELLOWSHIP SCHEME 2020-21 [Must Apply]

To encourage top international postgraduate research students to pursue doctoral studies in Hong Kong, a Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme was established by the Hong Kong Research Grants Council in 2009.
​
The Fellowship provides a monthly stipend of HK$25,100 and a travel allowance for conferences and research of HK$12,600 per year for the awardees for a maximum of three years. More than 250 Ph.D. Fellowships are available for the 2019/20 academic year.

Eligibility Candidates:

who are seeking admission as new full time PhD students in the following eight universities, irrespective of their country of origin, prior work experience and ethnic background, should be eligible to apply.

  • City University of Hong Kong
  • Hong Kong Baptist University
  • Lingnan University
  • The Chinese University of Hong Kong
  • The Education University of Hong Kong
  • The Hong Kong Polytechnic University
  • The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology
  • The University of Hong Kong

​Applicants should demonstrate outstanding qualities of academic performance, research ability / potential, communication and interpersonal skills, and leadership abilities.
Fellowship Award

The Fellowship provides an annual stipend of HK$309,600 (approximately US$39,700) and a conference and research-related travel allowance of HK$12,900 (approximately US$1,700) per year for each awardee for a period up to three years. 250 PhD Fellowships will be awarded in the 2020/21 academic year*. For awardees who need more than three years to complete the PhD degree, additional support may be provided by the chosen universities. For details, please contact the universities concerned directly.

* Universities in Hong Kong normally start their academic year in September.
Selection Panel

Shortlisted applications, subject to their areas of studies, will be reviewed by one of the following two Selection Panels comprising experts in the relevant board areas:
  • Science, Medicine, Engineering and Technology
  • Humanities, Social Science and Business Studies

Selection Criteria

While candidates' academic excellence is of primary consideration, the Selection Panels will take into account factors as follows:
  • Academic excellence;
  • Research ability and potential;
  • Communication and interpersonal skills; and
  • Leadership abilities.

How to Apply?

Eligible candidates should first make an Initial Application online through the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme Electronic System (HKPFSES) to obtain an HKPFS Reference Number by 2 December 2019 at Hong Kong Time 12:00:00 before submitting applications for PhD admission to their desired universities.

Applicants may choose up to two programmes / departments at one or two universities for PhD study under HKPFS 2020/21. They should comply with the admission requirements of their selected universities and programmes.

As the deadlines for applications to some of the universities may immediately follow that of the Initial Application, candidates should submit initial applications as early as possible to ensure that they have sufficient time to submit applications to universities.
